Since my last post in which he spoke about rapid weight gain that I suffered, I wanted to delve deeper into the issue, I am taking prednisone 15mg inter-day form, go to the gym to strengthen my muscles and bones osteoporosis and see a nutritionist who taught me how to eat, all this due to prednisone, there is a syndrome caused by prolonged use of corticosteroids and high-called "Cushing Syndrome"
This syndrome is caused by increase of the hormone cortisol, a hormone produced naturally by the adrenal glands that helps the body to stress, to maintain blood pressure, cardiovascular function, immune system and makes the fat, carbohydrates and proteins into energy.
There are two types of Cushing's syndrome, the symptoms are the same, the difference is in the cause of the syndrome.
The most common type is exogenous to find patients with immune-based diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromaialgia, scleroderma, etc., whose treatment includes the use of corticosteroids such as prednisone, for the purpose of stopping the immune system. This type of syndrome is temporary and will disappear once the patient stops taking the drugs. The other type is endogenous Cushing's syndrome caused by a problem in the adrenal glands or the pituitary. In the adrenal glands is caused by a tumor (usually non-cancerous) tumor that produces excess cortisol. In the pituitary, the problem is caused by a tumor that produces too much ACTH (a hormone that stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol), there are times displayed other pituitary tumors that produce excess ACTH also causing the syndrome.
Symptoms include: • rounded face (moon face) and red. • Acne or infection
to the skin. • Hair loss.
• Accumulation of fat between the shoulders (buffalo hump).
• Accumulation of grease on the clavicles.
• high blood sugar.
• High blood pressure.
• Loss of muscle mass. • Mass loss, pain and tenderness of the bones.
• Back pain that occurs with routine activities.
• Thin skin with the bruising, slow to heal after injury.
• purple streaks.
• Depression.
• Excessive facial hair in women.
• Irregular or absent menses and infertility.
• Loss of sex drive.
• In children, growth deficiency and obesity.
Treatment for Cushing's syndrome depends on the cause, symptoms in the exogenous nature disappears when the patient stops taking corticosteroid drugs in endogenous change will require surgery, radiation and drugs to reduce the production of cortisol .
